Sri Lanka is a street-smart unit. They have with them a taste for aggression that has brought them success. They are a top-heavy bating unit which is capable of responding to most situations.
But for their awful campaign in 1999, their World Cup cricket journey have been with most success, reaching the semi-finals in 2003 and the final in 2007 and 2011
Just imagine a world class line-up in Dilshan, followed by Sangakkara, Jayawardne, Chandimmal and Thirumanne with allrounders in Mathew and Perera to follow. Their successes have by been by stacking their XI with allrounders purposefully, to ensure that they bat deep enough.
Saddled with transforming the Sri Lankan attacks fortunes is Malinga, who has not bowled any competitive cricket from September 2014. The expectations on him are nothing new for him. With him bowling on end, backed up by Kulasekra and Lakmal, there is Dilshan whose canny offspin will help to break a big partnership.
Mathews is captaining the side with 3 former captains and all of them will not be available in their next edition of the World Cup. Sri Lanka will not get a better opportunity to convert the semi-finalist or finalist tag into a World Cup title tag. Yet, this team needs to do more when it comes to facing Aussies or New Zealand or South Africa in the Semi-finals.
