Sachin, Harbhajan and Gambhir 'rested'

It looks like the selectors know the business of finding the right combination ahead of the World Cup by resting some seniors thereby have a look of the young prospects.

I am talking of the fresh talents in the form Mithun, Saurabh Tiwary and R.Ashwin. It looks like atleast two of these 3 players will have a look-in when the first ODI starts on 10th August.

This would mean that the following players will not get a look-in till the World Cup is over - (a) Manish Pandey (b) Chateswar Pujara, (c) Ashok Dinda, (d) Murali Vijay and (e) Badrinath. This selection process would also mean the end of the road for Badrinath as the competition in vying the critical spot for both tests and one-day seems to be on the rise, with younger players able to handle the pressure better.

The selectors by doing this have ensured that there will be only 2 openers for the World Cup - Sehwag and Gambhir. Since Gambhir has been rested, they have not looked for another specialist opener in the form of Murali Vijay, instead they have opted for ever reliable Dinesh Karthik.

The series which also involves Sri Lanka and New Zealand has a league phase in which each team plays the other twice before the top two advance to final on August 28.

India squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Abhimanyu Mithun, Ashish Nehra, Pragyan Ojha, Saurabh Tiwary

The team for the 1st ODI will be as follows: Sehwag, Dinesh Karthik, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Yuvaraj, Dhoni, Jadeja/Mithun, R.Ashwin, Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra.
