Rain simply refused to relent on the entire day2 at Galle. The day was washed out due to intermittend showers. Overnight rain had ensured there was no play possible before lunch, and the conditions deteriorated further with bad light and sporadic downpours.
While Rain God has brought smiles to the faces of Indians, the same could not be said of SL. Sri Lanka's attempt to compile a massive first-innings score and pressurise India was put on hold as the entire second day in Galle was washed out. The hosts had reached a dominant position at the end of the first day, finishing on 256 for 2. With Mahela Jayawardene giving Paranavitana company, and Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews and Prasanna Jayawardene to follow, things look bleak for the Indian team. SL needs to bat the entire day on Tuesday and bowl India twice - But this is highly impossible, India needs to bat like a No. 10 rating team in the world to be dismissed twice under 2 days. Thus, my net result however, is that, the match is already heading towards a draw
Bring Back Irfan Pathan
I had reported in my earlier column that given the conditions, India requires an all-rounder. Had an all-rounder been brought in to the squad, there could have been some balance in the team. This was also echoed by Kristen on Sunday. But why has this not been brought to the notice of Indian Team Selection in India. Had Irfan Pathan been used ahead of Ishant, we could have used 3 spinners and used as a good foil to counter attack Sri Lanka. Will he be recalled in the 2nd test ?- I hope Srikkanth reads this article.
